Strawberries can beat stress

Feeling the pressure of those mounting deadlines? You need some strawberries. Experts have found that the magnesium found within this delicious fruit can reduce your anxiety levels. Plus, strawberries contain mood-boosting flavonoids.
If you know that you have a stressful day coming up, why not make a strawberry smoothie for breakfast to help keep you stress-free?

Butternut squash soup to put a smile on your face

Coming in from the cold to a steaming mug of butternut squash soup is enough to put a smile on anybody’s face. But actually it’s not just the comforting warmth from this winter staple that makes us happy. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that of the 106 adults who took part in the study, those that had the highest levels of omega-3 in their blood were an incredible 49 to 58 per cent happier, compared to those adults who had lower levels of omega-3. Fantastically, butternut squash is also rich in antioxidants, high in vitamin C and has been linked to blood sugar regulation. That’s a whole load of goodness in one small bowl.

Tuna to boost your concentration

If you’re struggling to concentrate, load up your next meal with tuna. Tuna contains an amino acid known as tyrosine, which helps to increase levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain.
Don’t know what those chemicals do? Well, they help make you feel alert. Therefore a tuna salad makes the perfect lunch if you’ve got a big meeting in the afternoon that you have got to be switched on for.

Pineapple will make you happier

Feeling blue? Pineapple might make you feel a little better. A study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry discovered that depression was linked to low levels of vitamin C.  Similarly, other studies have found that the brain can become damaged because of free radicals, yet vitamin C can help to combat these molecules.
Therefore eating pineapple - which contains really high levels of vitamin C (around 78.87mg per cup) – could help to lift your mood.

Oatcakes to conquer sluggishness

Can’t get going today? Try eating a plateful of hot oatcakes. This hearty dish should make you feel more revitalised because the B vitamins in oats help us to turn carbs into the glucose that fuels our bodies. To make sure you keep your B vitamin levels topped up today, try to avoid processed foods too. When foods are processed the vitamin B1 is often destroyed. So, to boost your energy levels ditch the junk food and stick to natural, fresh ingredients.
If you’re not a fan of oatcakes or oats, other foods that are high in B vitamins include: sardines, asparagus, yogurt, lima beans and sunflower seeds. Try and include one of these foods at every meal of your day to conquer your sluggishness.

Relax with some celery sticks

If you need to unwind it can be tempting to reach for a comforting bar of chocolate, but don’t. Instead chop up some celery sticks and serve with a healthy dip, like hummus or crème fraiche. Celery may not sound as appealing as the bar of chocolate, but this veg is the perfect stress-buster because it contains a chemical with a ridiculously complicated name - 3-n-butylphthalide. Name aside, this chemical is great because it helps us to reduce the level of stress hormones in our bodies. If you don’t like celery sticks, add celery into a stock or create a delicious celery gratin.

Yogurt will boost your mood

Get out of your foul mood by adding a dollop of natural yogurt to your next meal. Yogurt contains tryptophan, which is an amino acid that can seriously improve your mood. Tryptophan helps our bodies to create serotonin AKA the happiness hormone. So if you want to get out of your bad mood fast, mix some berries and oats into some yogurt for a healthy breakfast or big snack. You could also use Greek yogurt and cucumber to create tzatziki - perfect for dipping slices of hot wholemeal pitta bread into.
If you want to eat more tryptophan, look out for good sources of protein as these tend to contain high levels of tryptophan too.
