Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has come out to defend national gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi who was criticised for exposing her "aurat" while competing in the SEA Games held in Singapore over the week.

He told her critics to leave her alone and let God be the judge of her deeds.

“In gymnastics Farah wowed the judges and brought home gold. In her deeds only the Almighty judges her. Not you. Leave our athletes alone,” said Khairy in his tweet @Khairykj on the issue early today.

Farah Ann, 21, won gold in the women’s floor exercise and women’s team event. She also won silver in the women’s individual events and three bronze medals in the Games.

Social media users responded to Khairy's comment, with @edmundmynatc saying: “I found Malaysian giving a weird in social media. She win a gold for nation which we shld be proud as Malaysian.”

Another follower @sayang_intan said, "Indeed..the person questioning should ask why he/she was even looking or even have a thought at a child like that??!!!”

Social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir also criticised those who took issue with the gymnast's attire, asking what good they had done for Malaysia.

"So... those people who spend their time looking at athlete's private parts, what exactly have they done to bring glory to their country?" Marina posted on her Facebook page.

The criticism over Farah Ann's purple outfit, a leotard typically worn by gymnasts, started on Wednesday after her photo was uploaded on Buletin TV3’s Facebook page with a caption that the Malay athlete had won a gold medal for the floor exercise category.

Some social media users said it was "too revealing".

Muslim Facebook users made unsavoury remarks against the athlete, saying her outfit was not in line with Islam as she is a Muslim.

The Star reported that the athlete beat Indonesia and Vietnam to the gold by garnering 13.733 points to win the floor exercise routine on Wednesday at the regional games currently held in Singapore. – June 13, 2015.
