 Open Bible Van Gogh
By Tom Gurney

Open Bible is a famous Vincent Van Gogh painting which this article covers in great detail. Open Bible is just one of many great works by this famous Dutch artist who is loved around the world even today. In fact, despite the brilliance and popularity of Open Bible, it is still only one of his lesser known oil paintings, behind the likes of Wheatfield with Cypresses, Sunflowers, Cafe Terrace, Cypresses and several self portraits.

Open Bible was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1885 and is now stored in the Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam. The letters of the Bible are not readable in this work as this great Dutch artist attempts to make the symbol his subject rather than distracting viewers with minor details. This helps him to portray the message that he wants as clearly as possible.

Van Gogh had a complex relationship with religion throughout his life, always striving to find an answer to his troubles which he sadly never managed. The purpose of this painting remains discussed and undecided. Some believe the ambiguity of the language portrays religion in the same light, whilst others feel that the overall portrayal is positive and constructive, encouraging others to follow Vincent's beliefs.

In conclusion, this famous Bible oil painting is a great example of the works of Vincent and well worth studying. It is a rare choice of religious subject matter for this expressive painter and is a good work in it's own right. For this reason, many art fans still like to buy Open Bible as reproduction even today.
